Abstract

Picturebook is usually the first kind of book that a child encounters. Thus, it is important to explore the possibilities it offers to provide children with quality reading material that engages young readers in different ways to help them develop their literary competence. This thesis gives an overview of research on interactive aspects of picturebooks that affect the reader’s interpretation of a story engaging him/her on a physical or intellectual level. The first two chapters consider the fundamental concepts related to picturebooks, such as the relationship between words and pictures with the highlight on how emotions are conveyed through the visual discourse and in the process of transmediation. Since picturebooks are multimodal, one of the aspects involved in constructing meaning is their three-dimensionality. It is related to the physical contact with the picturebook as a three-dimensional object. The third chapter gives an overview of kinds of picturebooks interactive on a physical level. The great potential of engaging readers on an intellectual level is presented through examples of postmodern picturebooks and metafictive devices they employ. In conclusion, the focus is on the importance of interactive picturebooks in motivating children for reading and social interactions during the shared reading of picturebooks in the classroom.

Abstract (croatian)

Slikovnica je prvi oblik knjige s kojom se dijete susreće. Zbog toga je važno istražiti sve mogućnosti koje ona nudi kako bi se djeci dao kvalitetan materijal koji angažira mlade čitatelje na različite načine, te im pomaže u razvoju njihove književne kompetencije. Ovaj rad daje pregled istraživanja interaktivnih aspekata slikovnice koji utječu na čitateljevu interpretaciju priče u slikovnici angažirajući ga na fizičkoj ili intelektulnoj razini. Prva dva poglavlja rada sadrže osnovne pojmove vezane uz karakteristike slikovnica kao što su veza između slike i teksta, te je posebna pažnja posvećena tome kako se vizualnim jezikom prenose emocije u procesu transmedijacije. S obzirom da slikovnicu odlikuje multimodalnost, jedno je od obilježja koje pridonosi konstruiranju značenja i njena trodimenzionalnost. Ona upućuje na fizički kontakt sa slikovnicom kao trodimenzionalnim objektom te je u trećem poglavlju dan pregled vrsta slikovnica koje pružaju mogućnost interakcije s čitateljem na fizičkoj razini. Veliki potencijal angažiranja čitatelja na intelektulanoj razini prikazan je na primjeru postmodernih slikovnica i metafiktivnih postupaka u slikovnicama. Kraj rada posvećen je važnosti interaktivnih slikovnica pri motiviranju djece za čitanje i socijalnim interakcijama tijekom zajedničkoga čitanja slikovnica u učionici.
