O kompetenciji komunikacije ovisit će razvoj djetetove osobnosti, ovisit će razvoj sposobnosti razmišljanja, donošenja zaključaka, učenja novih pojmova i vještina i konačno, o govornoj kompetenciji ovisit će razina uspješnosti čovjeka u životu i u onim područjima u kojima on djeluje.
Abstract (english) The aim of this work was to explore the question of importance of storytelling and telling stories to children of early and preschool age. Stories are important to children, but they are also important to adults. Children require them, because they provide a foundation to understanding the world, and to the adults, stories help through metaphors and images in particularly difficult times in life. They offer solace and answers to existential and spiritual questions. We live in an age when humanity has access to various means of public information. These means can be very attractive to the youngest recipients due to their dinamic visual and auditory images, however direct verbal contact of adults and kids is the most important factor. Many consider the communication in native language the most important skill which everyone needs to master. The competencies to communicate will determine the development of child's personality, development of the child's ability to think, to make conclusions, to learn new terms and new skills, and most importantly, communication competencies will determine the level of success in life and every future endeavour. Through stories and fairytales, children recognize fundamental human values, the best and most valuable human traits, and how to act from a moral standpoint. They teach children how to act emphatically and altruistically according to a behaviour model which is granted to them by the hero of the story. Storytelling encourages children to spontaneous speech, which should not be stifled by the adults. Stories and fairytales have an therapeutic effect in the sense that they positively affect certain behaviours of children. The task at hand should be leading children to completely independent expression of language. This can be achieved only if storytelling is made into a continuous long term project, and if we live with stories in harmonious coexistence.
