Abstract

Nowadays, there are thousands of different cultures around the world. Each individual culture has its own set of values, customs and beliefs, which make it specific among other cultures. Cultural diversity has a great impact on the process of translation. In order to translate culture-specific items, translators need to be familiar with the differences among cultures. In this graduation thesis, we will study the process of translating culture-specific items in the Croatian translation of The Giver, written by Lois Lowry in 1993. Predrag Raos, a Croatian translator and writer of science fiction and satire, performed the Croatian translation Davač in 2001. The aim of this graduation thesis is to analyze which translation strategies and procedures Predrag Raos used in order to translate culture-specific items from The Giver (1993) into Croatian. The cultural elements, which this analysis will focus on, include characters’ names and nicknames, ceremonies and events, institutions, jobs and occupations, idioms and phrases.

U današnje vrijeme, diljem svijeta postoji više od tisuću različitih kultura. Svaka pojedina kultura ima svoje vrijednosti, stavove i običaje koje ju čine jedinstvenom i različitom od drugih kultura. Kulturna različitost snažno utječe na proces prevođenja. Kako bi prevoditelji mogli prevoditi kulturno-specifične sadržaje, trebaju biti upoznati s različitostima u pojedinim kulturama. U ovom diplomskom radu proučit će se proces prevođenja kulturno-specifičnih sadržaja u hrvatskom prijevodu romana The Giver. Autorica Lois Lowry napisala je knjigu The Giver 1993. godine. Hrvatski prijevod Davač načinio je Predrag Raos, hrvatski prevoditelj i pisac znanstvene fantastike i satire. Knjiga je prevedena 2001. godine. Cilj ovog diplomskog rada je analizirati strategije i tehnike prevođenja koje je Predrag Raos koristio u prijevodu kulturno-specifičnih sadržaja iz romana The Giver. Kulturni sadržaji koji se koriste u analizi uključuju imena i nadimke likova, ceremonije i događaje, nazive institucija, zanimanja te idiome i fraze.
