Abstract

Diabetes mellitus je metabolički poremećaj koji karakterizira kronično povišena koncentracija glukoze u krvi. Kod zdrave osobe koncentracije glukoze u krvi natašte su od 5,6 do 6,9 mmol/L. Dijabetes tip 1 može se javiti u bilo kojoj dobi, od novorođenačke do starije dobi, ali je obično rijetka u dojenačkoj dobi i nakon četrdesete godine života. Podjela dijabetesa koja prema kojoj razlikujemo nekoliko tipova, a među kojima su: tip 1 šećerne bolesti, tip 2 šećerne bolesti, ostale tipove šećerne bolesti i gestacijski dijabetes, ali zajedničko im je da nastaju kao rezultat problema s inzulinom. Inzulin je hormon koji proizvodi gušterača, a služi kako bi omogućio glukozi da uđe u stanice. Znakovi i simptomi bolesti razvijaju se brzo, obično tijekom nekoliko tjedana. Dijete iskazuje tipične simptome kao što su često mokrenje velikih količina mokraće, stalna žeđ, pojačan apetit, gubitak tjelesne težine i slabost.
Posljedice nedostatka inzulina često budu jako teške pa važno djelovati preventivno i/ili što prije prepoznati simptome kako bi se bolest mogla kontrolirati u granicama normalnih vrijednosti. Kako bi se to postiglo bitno je educirati ljude o načinu djelovanja dijabetesa na organizam i prepoznavanju glavnih simptoma ove bolesti.

Abstract (english)

Diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disorder characterized by chronically elevated blood glucose levels. In a healthy individual, fasting blood glucose concentrations range from 5.6 to 6.9 mmol/L. Type 1 diabetes can occur at any age, from infancy to old age, but it is typically rare in infants and after the age of forty. Diabetes is divided into several types, including type 1 diabetes, type 2 diabetes, other types of diabetes, and gestational diabetes, but they all result from issues with insulin. Insulin is a hormone produced by the pancreas that allows glucose to enter cells. Signs and symptoms of the disease develop rapidly, usually over a few weeks. Typical symptoms include frequent urination, excessive thirst, increased appetite, weight loss, and weakness.
The consequences of insulin deficiency are often very severe, so it is crucial to act preventively and/or recognize symptoms as early as possible to control the disease within normal limits. To achieve this, it is essential to educate people about how diabetes affects the body and how to recognize the main symptoms of this disease.
