Abstract U ovom radu iznosi se istraživanje poznavanja i uporabe govora Staroga Grada (starogrojskega) kod djece predškolske dobi, na prigodnom uzorku. Drugi dio rada govori o dječjemu jezičnom razvoju, o dječjem ovladavanju jezikom i govorom, o značenju okoline i odraslih u tom procesu, a posebno o važnosti obitelji u sveobuhvatnom procesu dječjega razvoja.
Abstract (english) This thesis deals with the research on the knowledge and use of Stari Grad dialect among preschool children on a representative sample. The thesis consists of four parts (chapters). The first part contains a brief overview of the Chakavian dialect of Croatian language. The concept of dialect is explained, the division and distribution of the Chakavian dialect are shown, and the characteristics of Southern Chakavian dialect (phonological, morphological, syntactical and lexical) are offered, as well as its distribution, followed by the characteristics of Stari Grad speech and a brief overview of literary artists who were using it. The second part of the thesis deals with children's language development, their speech and language acquisition, the significance of environment and adults in the process, and especially the importance of family in the overall process of child development. The third part discusses the possibilities of encouraging children's language development in working with children. Also, this part emphasizes the role of parents and educators in fostering children's language development and activities that they could implement in working with children. The fourth part of the thesis deals with the research itself. The respondents were preschool children and adult speakers of Stari Grad, that were responding to semi-structured questions and were recorded while interviewed. The recording lasted for two minutes. The aim was to verify the language identity of both preschool children and adult speakers. We were interested in seeing to what extent is „starogrojski“ dialect still present among preschool children and adults who live in Stari Grad on the island of Hvar, or were born there but currently live elsewhere. Therefore, the goal was to determine the differences in speakers separated by three generations – preschool children and adult speakers in their great-grandmothers/fathers' generation. This research showed that the lexemes that are characteristic of the Stari Grad speech are significantly less frequent in children's speech than in adult speech, that is, the younger generation is less likely to preserve dialectal elements in their speech.
