Abstract (english) The picture book, as the first reading material intended for a child, is a portal into the world of the written word and also the first encounter with literature that enables a gradual journey from the concrete world to the contextual world of symbols. Helping a child to discover the world and media of the written world, developing cognition and speech, enriching the vocabulary, getting used to using the book and developing the need for reading books, and also to allow children to see the world through the eyes of an artist, are just some of the benefits provided by a quality picture book. Nowadays, we are aware that children are born surrounded by the media and that they start to use them at an early age. Therefore, the role of the media along with family and peers in the process of socialization is becoming increasingly important. The difference between generations that grew up surrounded by passive media is that today's new millennials or so-called the Google generation does not know how to live without cell phones, computers and the Internet. All they need to know is just a few mouse clicks away from them. Leaving the Age of Print, the technology development brings us a massive development of electronic communication and the consequence is encountering new text forms. In the process of digitalization, written literature is transformed into a new form which leads to a new type of literature – electronic literature. The electronic literature brings us changes in the way we read, interact with texts and interpret them. The world of picture books is constantly changing. Their multimodality, which relied on verbal and visual formats is expanding towards the inclusion of auditory, tactile and performance forms. As children’s physical and intellectual development is being quicker, it indicates the need for strengthening the pedagogical functions of preschool institutions and also the educational functions of parents in development of critical media literacy – an approach that doesn't bring resistance to new media, but evokes curiosity, research and questioning it.
