Abstract Tema ovog diplomskog rada jesu veliki brojevi u primarnom matematičkom obrazovanju.
Abstract (english) The topic of this thesis is “large numbers in primary mathematics education”. The term „large numbers“ refers to the natural numbers bigger than one hundred, and one of the ways of teaching them is through the use of mathematical picture books. The aim of the paper is to investigate the mathematical and methodical characteristics of available mathematical picture books related to the acquisition of large numbers.
This thesis describes the characteristics of large natural numbers: the explanation of the term "natural numbers", the names of large natural numbers, and their record in the table of place values. The elements of mathematics education important for the adoption of the concept of large numbers in primary education are highlighted, such as the principles and methods of work in mathematics teaching and the ELPS model (experience – language – pictures – symbols) and its application in the adoption of the concept of large numbers. Regarding the above-mentioned goal of the paper, the educational significance of mathematical picture books and their application in teaching mathematics is explained below.
The paper also includes an analysis of mathematical picture books, available in the library of the Faculty of Teacher Education, University of Zagreb, regarding to mathematical elements, the presence of potential principles of mathematics education, the potential presence of work methods and application of the ELPS model. The results show that the most common large number in the analyzed picture books is 1,000,000 and that they are mostly natural numbers from 1 to 1,000,000. The principles are potentially presented in every picture book, and they can all be applied with the help of the ELPS model, where experience and images complement each other, and speech takes an important part in the learning process. In teaching mathematics, the teacher can use all the mentioned work methods using the analyzed picture books, and it is very likely that the majority will choose the demonstration method and the method of working on the text.
