Abstract (english) This thesis is about the multilingual competence of students in primary education and their interest in learning foreign languages and getting to know other nations and their cultures.
At the beginning of the thesis, the term of multilingualism is briefly described, as well as the policies that regulate multilingualism in the European Union and the advantages of foreign language acquisition in the early stages of primary school education. The thesis takes into consideration different skills, with emphasis on multilingualism and interculturalism.
An outline is also given of the way foreign language learning is regulated in the Republic of Croatia.
For the purpose of this thesis, a survey was conducted among 4th grade students in several primary schools in Croatia and Germany. The aim of the survey, among other things, was to research how many and which languages were spoken by schoolchildren of this age and where they learned these languages. Furthermore, which languages they study exclusively as part of their school education and whether they show interest in learning and getting to know new languages and cultures.
The research results show that students speak at least one or two foreign languages and that most of them exhibit interest in meeting new peoples and cultures as well as learning new languages. However, the results also show that 4th grade students in Croatia study two foreign languages in primary school, whereas their German counterparts only study one.
