Abstract (english) Language and the ability to communicate are the main helpers for a child when entering social life or a cultural community. The two adopted languages enable the child to step into the world of two social communities. For the harmonization and harmony of the two languages, it is necessary for the adults who surround the child to positively influence the child's development and to provide a pleasant atmosphere in both communities. Learning and acquiring a language is considered a process that never stops, and even in the heritage language, new words are constantly being acquired. When a child is enrolled in an educational institution, the child's education begins in the heritage language and then in another language. The simultaneous use of two or more languages when enrolling a child in an educational institution can result in certain difficulties such as issues of identity and cultural belonging. Also, it can result in difficult acquisition of morphological, semantic and phonological levels. For this reason, the role of the child's environment and the quality of the early and preschool education institution is crucial.
The paper presents Croatian-Hungarian bilingualism and the adoption of Hungarian as a second language. Also, it deals with the research of differences in the knowledge of lexemes in Croatian-Hungarian, that is, Hungarian-Croatian bilingual children of preschool age, taking into account; family context, the language they use outside the preschool education institution, the age of the child and the kindergarten environment. The subjects of the conducted research are children between the ages of two and six (n = 10), enrolled in an educational group where the Hungarian language is used. Parents (n = 20) also participated in the research, filling out a sociolinguistic questionnaire. The aim of the research is to assess the differences in the knowledge of some common lexemes in Hungarian and Croatian among bilingual children of kindergarten and preschool age with regard to the use of the language, carrying out activities in a specific language, the age of the child and the level of education of the parents. Looking at the obtained results, it is evident that children from families who use both languages simultaneously, who use the Hungarian language well in their free time and whose parents have a higher level of education, were more successful in naming terms.
